Barbara Tilly set an example for all of us, devoting her life to family, faith and service
An overflow crowd of people packed into Grace Lutheran Church June 15 to celebrate the life of Barbara Tilly, a former educator, civic leader and a humanitarian who exemplified the Rotary ideal of Service Above Self.
A devout Christian, Barbara was an organizational genius who contributed much through leadership positions at Grace Lutheran, the Wenatchee Valley Symphony, Chelan-Douglas Republican women, Habitat for Humanity and was twice elected to serve on the Chelan County Public Utility District Commission.
She and husband Earl, a former state legislator, business owner and state director of Farmers Home Administration, were the first couple married at Grace Lutheran Church, some 63 years ago.
Their son Bart Tilly talked about his mother as someone who sought out opportunities to help underdogs in our community and elsewhere. He described her as a gambler — a person who believed in people and made bets that they make important contributions.
Later in life, she never slowed down and continued to find ways to make a difference. She started the Packing Friendship program in the valley to provide weekly food bags for children and families in need.
When Russia invaded Ukraine, the Tillys and others supported families from that country who moved into our valley and needed help.
For those wishing to give a memorial, funds are being accepted for either the Packing Friendship or the Grace Lutheran Church Youth Music Outreach Ministry. Contributions in Barbara’s name can be sent to 1408 Washington St., Wenatchee, Wa 98801.
What an example Barbara Tilly set for her family and the community at large. She will be missed but long remembered.
